Flatweave rugs have many benefits all year round, even though they are usually associated with summer due to their lightweight properties. In this blog post, we will answer all the commonly asked questions surrounding flatweave rugs, including; what is a flatweave wool rug? As well as, are flatweave rugs soft? But first, let’s start with the basics…
What is a Flatweave Rug?
A flatweave rug is created using a weaving technique which involves the weaving of wool (or the chosen material) around warp thread pairs. When finished, these fibres create the entirety of the rug’s surface. The backing is created by weaving threads on a loom, meaning the pattern is usually reversible on each side, much unlike the usual backing or pile you would find on other rugs. The true definition of a flatweave rug is a rug that is made without using any knots at all in the process.
All you Need to Know about Flatweave Rugs
1. Are flatweave rugs soft?
This is the most commonly asked question when it comes to flatweave rugs and, in short, there are softer rugs out there such as sheepskin and shaggy rugs. However, there are softer variations of flatweave rugs such as those made of wool (known simply as a flatweave wool rug) and polyester. Despite not being the softest rug available, there are so many more beneficial reasons to get a flatweave rug, some of which are outlined below.
2. Lightweight and Easy to Handle
As flatweave rugs don’t have a pile, they usually have less material overall and are therefore considered one of the lightest types of rug there is. In addition, they are a lot more flexible then other rugs too and much easier to fold away or roll up, if you want to store them anywhere. If like us, you enjoy moving your rooms around and experimenting with placement, these rugs are great to manipulate with no heavy lifting required.
3. Durable
Due to the flatness of these rugs, they tend to be a lot more durable, as flat areas or prints don’t develop as they do in other styles of rugs. Also, the weave style of the rug means that the tips aren’t constantly being trampled, keeping the rug preserved for much longer.
4. Easy to Clean
As well as being durable, flatweave rugs are easy to clean, as you can vacuum them without worrying about damage to the rug. Be careful when hoovering such a light rug though, as they can easily slip if not secured in place. However, as the rugs are so light, it means they’re very easy to pick up and beat and shake off dust and other bits. The best news of all? It’s so much easier to blot any spills away on a flatweave rug, which normally soak quickly into other types of rugs.
5. Cheaper Compared to Other Rug Styles
Overall the skill required to make and design a flatweave rug is undoubtedly great, but with this rug type, the cost is significantly less than others, as they take much less time to make. If you’re decorating on a budget, then these rugs are definitely the choice for you!
