5 Ways to Update Your Flooring Over a Weekend

5 Ways to Update Your Flooring Over a Weekend

10 Aug 2018

Flooring is one of the most difficult DIY areas of the house. This can lead to feelings of boredom towards your flooring in want of avoiding the hassle and expense of replacing it. Do not despair, though, these easy flooring ideas will give you inspiration of how you can update your flooring yourself, on a budget, over the weekend.

1. Layered Rugs

Simple yet very effective. Adding a rug (or multiple rugs) into a room not only hides the flooring underneath, but also gives the room a new ambience. By adding multiple rugs into a room it can give the illusion of more space or help to define the features of the room.

This is the quickest and most hassle-free way of updating your flooring as it doesn’t require all of the furniture to be moved or waiting for varnish to dry. Check out our previous blog for tips on how to style multiple rugs in a room. Browse our collection of stylish rugs to update your flooring.

2. Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vinyl Plank Flooring

Also known as a floating floor, you’ll have seen it on TV programmes such as DIY SOS where they place flooring down in a matter of hours. You can do that too! It’s much cheaper to do it yourself, and there are plenty of videos online to instruct you. Most of the time it’s as simple as snapping planks of wood into place!

3. Stairway Runners

Stairway Runner

If the hallway flooring is driving you crackers, distract your eye and make the staircase a feature by adding a stair runner. Simply grab some runners, a staple gun and double sided carpet tape to transform your staircase. For a full guide read This Old Houses guide to installing a stair runner. As this does not require a lot of carpet, this easy flooring idea can transform your home without pulling on the purse strings or taking up too much of your precious weekend.

4. DIY Stencilled Tiles

Easy Flooring Ideas

Add a different twist to your tiles by creating your own unique pattern. This straightforward technique creates a beautiful design you can be proud of. Simply paint over your original tiles to create your blank canvas. Then, paint your stencil over the tile. Pick bold colours and a graphic print for the most impact! This DIY flooring idea is budget friendly as it doesn’t require too much paint (depending on the size of the room). Check out LollyJanes post for inspiration and tips.

5. Wallpapered Floors

If stencilling isn’t up your street but you like the idea of a pattern then use readymade wallpaper! Wallpaper isn’t just for walls. Whilst not ideal for high traffic floors such as hallways, it can add a special twist to a bedroom or powder room. If this easy method takes your fancy, take a look at HomeGuides’ guide for How to Wallpaper a Floor; or similarly, there are many tutorials online for you to follow.

Hopefully, this post has given you some inspiration for DIY flooring ideas on a budget. Don’t be afraid to get creative as a new flooring can give your whole home a different feel!
