Traditional Regal Aubusson Rugs

The Aubusson Rug has a rich history, dating back to the Renaissance period. It was first produced in the traditional town of Aubusson which is renowned for its rug and tapestry designs.

Why we love this rug:

  • Hard-wearing
  • High density
  • Beautifully soft
  • Traditional design
  • Sustainable and environmentally friendly

From 1665, Aubusson rugs were based on Savonnerie designs which, prior to this time, were only available to the French King. With Aubusson weavers copying the designs of Savonnerie, the rugs became fashionable with the aristocracy of Europe. The town of Aubusson stopped rug production around 1870.

We retrieved our Regal Aubusson rugs from Bhadohi, India, which is home to the largest hand-knotted rug weaving industry in South Asia. Rug weaving in Bhadohi started in the 16th century, during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar when Persian master weavers stopped at the village of Madhosingh, near Khamaria, and set up looms.

These rugs are handmade using a technique called hand tufting. The floral design and colour scheme is classically pastel. The pile of the rugs is wool which gives the rugs a look and feel of luxury. The wool pile is incredibly soft and dense which creates a heavyweight rug that looks and feels of a superb quality.

We recommend using a rug underlay to prevent the rug from slipping, and to protect any dark colours transferring onto a light-coloured floor.
